About Franzesca
Franzesca grew up in Palo Alto, California where her mom taught her how to sew at the ripe age of eight. She expanded her skills into draping and patterning when she made four prom dresses for herself, her sister and two friends. Between graduating high school and sophomore year of college, she designed, created, organized and produced three fashion shows, with 15, 13 and 10 models, respectively.
She received formal training with Margo Shively at Knox College. In her later years at Knox, she shifted her focus from fashion to theatre and costuming. After graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor's degree in Theatre, she moved to Berkeley, California where she was the 2013-14 Costumes Fellow at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Berkeley was where her love for dressing and creating expanded. The incredibly talented womenswear draper at BRT taught Franzesca how to create garments out of bicycle tubes and other upcycled materials, which set her off on as adventure that would eventually become Rubberlesque.
After her fellowship, Franzesca moved to San Diego to work for the Old Globe Theatre. She gained experience working as a stitcher, first hand and as a dresser. In San Diego, she was approached by the Raw Artists Collective and put on her first professional fashion show at the San Diego House of Blues. She would go on to do three more shows with Raw all up and down the West Coast.
In between working shows at the Old Globe, Franzesca got a job working at a bridal and alterations shop in downtown San Diego. There, she was mentored in the finer points of bridal alterations and construction for a year and a half. Franzesca also added the service of making bespoke custom clothing for clients; everything from skirts to dresses to men's button downs.
In the winter of 2016, Franzesca moved to Ashland, Oregon to work as a Wardrobe Specialist for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. She also continued to freelance in custom clothing construction as well as bridal gowns. After four years working for the company that inspired her career, she departed the West Coast for a new adventure in Orlando, Florida. Franzesca started working with Cirque du Soleil just a few months before the pandemic broke out. She is part of the wardrobe team behind the Drawn to Life, the new Cirque du Soleil show housed in Disney Springs. Find out more about this new production here.
During the pandemic layoff, Franzesca sewed over 700 masks and taught herself how to make lingerie. She also made considerable progress towards an entirely handmade wardrobe. She returned to Florida to open Drawn to Life in November 2021.
